2018/2019 AUSXC Season Launch Fundraising Night
On Friday October the 12th the Australian Cross Country Ski Team hosted their annual Season Launch Fundraising Night. The showing was strong with over 100 tickets sold for the night, and the guests enjoyed the new venue at the Middlepark Bowls Club. Most Australian National Team athletes were in attendance helping the night run smoothly, with various jobs from food and drink serving to facilitating the silent and live auctions. Special guests for the evening included SSA president Dean Gosper and SSA board member Steve Cooper. The main features of the night included the online auction, live auctions and the announcement of the 2018/2019 Australian National Team.
By 7:45pm almost all ticket holders had arrived and the guests were welcomed, and the crowd kicked into gear perusing the items on display for any that were potentially bid worthy. The online auction included 50 items that were on display at the venue, with seven big ticket items auctioned off live. The live auctions were performed towards the end of the night and caused much excitement in the room.
A special presentation of a framed Australian Olympic Team flag signed by the six PyeongChang 2018 AUS XC athletes was made by dual Olympians Callum Watson and Phillip Bellingham to Patrick Montgomery and Mandy Milne, in recognition of their amazing support in hosting the AUSXC cocktail night from 2013-2017.
The official announcement of the National Team athletes took place with the 2019 Junior and U23 coach Callum Watson asking each member present to come forward and receive recognition. There were nine new athletes invited to join the Junior Team for their first time, and seventeen returning athletes invited across the Junior, U23, Continental Cup and World Cup teams.
On the fundraising side the night was a huge success, with nearly $13,000 raised towards the XC Towards 2022 campaign. This makes up approximately half of the team’s fundraising efforts for the 2018-2019 season, and will contribute to covering costs in four main areas; team uniforms, Junior and U23 World Championships, Senior World Championships and World Cup events. Many thanks to the athletes and their families for organising and supporting the night, and also to Brazen Brownies for supplying dessert!
